Tsunami warning towers to be set up on Bali

JAKARTA (AP): Six tsunami warning towers will be built on beaches on the resort island of Bali before year end, an Indonesian official said Wednesday, two days after deadly waves destroyed a popular tourist town on the south coast of Java.

The 15-meter (50 feet) towers will issue alarms within 10 minutes of an earthquake if experts believe a tsunami is approaching, said Sidik Budiman, head of the Bali's Meteorological and Geophysic Agency.

Anyone within 3 kilometers (2 miles) of the towers should be able to hear the sirens, Budiman said.

"People on the beaches and nearby places will then have 10 to 15 minutes to anticipate the tsunami," he said. "The towers will also inform residents of no tsunami within 15 minutes."

The towers will be operational by the end of the year, as part of a wider Indonesian tsunami warning system, Budiman said.

On Dec. 26, 2004, an earthquake and tsunami killed or left missing at least 216,000 people in 11 Indian Ocean nations. Indonesia's Sumatra island was the hardest hit, with about 128,000 people dead.

On Monday, a magnitude-7.7 earthquake caused a tsunami to strike the southern coast of Indonesia's Java island, killing at least 531 people. Official efforts to issue a tsunami warning were ineffective, and on Wednesday the government was still struggling to explain how its nascent warning system failed.

Indonesia started to install a warning system after the 2004 disaster and had been planning to extend it to Java in 2007. (**)

Hallo Dowe
