JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM - Following increased volcanic activity of Mount Agung or Gunung Agung in Karangasem Regency, Bali Province, the Center for Vulcanology of Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) raised the activity status of Mount Agung from Level II (Alert) to Level III (Standby Alert) starting from Monday, 9/18/2017 at 9 pm, local time.
Head of PVMBG has reported Moun Agung's raised status to the Head of National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB), Bali Provincial Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) and Karangasem Regency BPBD to take measures anticipating the worst-possible scenario of Mount Agung eruption.
Head of BNPB Information Data Center and Public Relations Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said PVMBG recommended people around Mount Agung and climbers/visitors/tourists not to have activities, not climb and not camp in the crater area of Mount Agung and in all areas within a radius of 6 km from the top crater of Mount Agung or at elevations above 950 meters above sea level along with sectoral extension to the North, Southeast and South-Southwest as far as 7.5 km. This zone must be empty of community activities.
Communities around Mount Agung and climbers/visitors/tourists are expected to remain calm while maintaining vigilance. Not to be hooked by issues about the eruption of Mount Agung whose source remains unknown. PVMBG continues to coordinate with BNPB, BPBD of Bali Province and BPBD of Karangasem Regency in providing information about the activities of Mount Agung.
"BNPB and BPBD continue to take anticipatory steps. Bali Provincial BPBD together with Regent of Karangasem, TNI [Indonesian Armed Forces], Police, Head of OPD [Regional Apparatus Organization], Sub-district and Village Heads of Karangasem have conducted a coordination meeting discussing the preparedness of the government and society against the eruption of Gunung Agung on Sunday (9/17/2017). Socialization to the community continues to be done where in the socialization the public is called to prepare bags containing clothes, food, valuables that will be used to evacuate if at any time Mount Agung erupted," said Sutopo, in a press release on Monday (9/18 ).
BNPB immediately accompany BPBD to develop contingency plans to face the eruption of Mount Agung. This contingency plan is drawn up involving various parties with reference to the threat level of the eruption of Mount Agung along with the worst scenario in handling it.
